Freight Shipping: Peak Season Shipping Tips

Historically, this is the time the freight shipping industry is hitting its traditional peak season, which starts in September, kicks into high gear in October and winds down during the first week of November. Peak season means there is much more freight available to carriers, who can be selective in getting the right freight and right price for their loads. Most of peak season is caused by manufacturers wanting their products in stores to supplement holiday inventory, however other industries simply have high freight needs during the fall.

Current national survey data shows that manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers are generally carrying fewer inventories going into this fall, meaning the potential for demand surprises are high. Though concerns about the economy may exist, speculation among the freight industry is that we will still have a strong peak season.

Peak Season Shipping Tips

Plan Ahead. With manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers all needing to ship during peak season capacity can be a concern. The more advance notice a shipper can provide will ensure carrier availability and a successful shipment, resulting in less stress.

Consider multiple vendors vs. single source. While relying on one provider can provide a seamless shipping process, it also limits options and contingencies. Using multiple carriers provides for more options, especially if the manufacturing line is behind or there are other unforeseen challenges. Multiple carriers may also allow for better transit options in certain areas.

Don’t forget Cyber Monday. Most of the traditional peak freight is built around retail’s biggest day – Black Friday, which is the Friday after Thanksgiving, but they neglect Cyber Monday. More consumers continue to buy products online so make sure to provide for cyber customers by considering fulfillment, or 3rd party warehousing as part of your supply chain.

New Freightquote Headquarters: Along with freight, we’re now moving ground

On Tuesday, August 14th, we officially broke ground on the site where our new headquarters will be located. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Kansas City Mayor Sly James were in attendance along with many other community leaders, the building developers and architectural group. Representing Freightquote were Chairman and CEO, Tim Barton, Chief Financial Officer, Matt Druten, Chief Operating Officer, Shawn McCarrick and Chief Information Officer, Byron Clymer.

With a projected move-in date of early summer, 2013, employees will soon be enjoying their brand n

ew, expanded office space. The building is conveniently located off a major interstate near many retail shops and restaurants.

This is an exciting time for Freightquote as the new headquarters will represent our continued growth. And while moving freight is what we do best, we’re finding we’re also pretty good at pushing around some dirt. Especially when it means new opportunities for future success.

The Partial Truckload Conundrum

Shippers face a conundrum with mid-sized shipments on a daily basis: To ship with a less than truckload or a full truckload carrier. Sometimes, the best choice is neither.

Partial truckload shipping is an under-utilized mode of transportation that avoids the cross-docking of LTL shipments and can lead to the big savings and fast transit times of full truckload shipping.

Not sure if your freight would make a good partial shipment? Keep the following characteristics of partial truckloads in mind.

Mid-Sized is the Right Size

Partial shipments are generally too large to move LTL but not large enough to fill an entire truckload trailer. Shipments that use less than 20 feet of trailer space and weigh less than 20,000 pounds make great partial shipments.

Delicate freight? No problem.

Customers who ship partial truckloads benefit from a dedicated trailer. Once a standard partial shipment is loaded onto a trailer, it stays on the same trailer until being delivered to its final destination. No LTL cross-docking, no need to determine LTL freight class, just a smooth ride from point A to B.

Exact Dimensions Are a Must

Carriers hauling partials search for multiple shipments in a logical geographical order to fill their trailer to the last inch. Before a carrier accepts a partial shipment, they’ll need the exact dimensions to ensure the freight will fit on the trailer.

Broad Dock Hours Go a Long Way

Partial carriers often have multiple pickups or deliveries to make in the same day, and arriving on time for appointments can be a challenge. The more flexible the shipper and consignee dock hours, the better the chance for your partial to be picked up and delivered in a timely manner.
