• Freight crating tips.

Freightquote.com manages over a million shipments a year. And while we do not offer freight crating services, below are some best practices to keep in mind to ensure each shipment arrives as expected.

  • Crating and shipping fragile or breakable freight.

Fragile or breakable freight should be packed with special care to avoid damage during shipping. While crating will protect your items to a certain extent, extra steps can be taken to ensure freight arrives damage-free.

    • If the cargo you are shipping is a fragile item such as glass or electronics, wrap the items separately.
    • Whenever possible, keep fragile and non-fragile items separate to minimize any damage that may occur if movement occurs within the crate during shipment.
    • Pack crates of fragile items as full as possible. Tightly packed items have less ability to shift during transit.
  • Wood crates.

Wood crates provide a flexible and safe option when crating is required for a shipment. Crates can be built to accommodate standard and non-standard freight dimensions and continue to provide protection for shipped items.

  • Crate packing.

To minimize the movement of items, pack items closely together. Heavier items should be placed on the bottom, with lighter items on top. Fill crates to capacity to minimize shifting during transit. If crates cannot be filled to capacity, use packing material to fill excess space.

Following these simple tips will help ensure a crated shipment arrives damage free.
