What is truckload equipment is available?
Dry van
This is the most common type of trailer used for moving truckloads of freight. The trailer is either 48’ or 53’ in length, and is used for moving dry, packaged freight that does not need temperature control. Freight is loaded through the back of the trailer from a loading dock.
Flatbed
This type of trailer has an open bed without walls. This is needed when moving product that cannot fit through the back doors of a dry van, or needs to be loaded by a crane or forklift from the side. It’s common to see large construction equipment and tubes or pipes moved on a flatbed trailer.
Refrigerated
This type of trailer is very similar to a dry van trailer, but it has an air conditioning unit installed to keep the contents of the trailer at a consistent temperature. These trailers are needed when moving perishable foods and specific types of liquids. Refrigerated shipments are more costly than dry van shipments. Sometimes, when a dry van isn’t available, a refrigerated trailer can be used, with the AC turned off, but the inside space is smaller because of the refrigeration equipment.
When to use a full truckload
Shipments larger than about 15,000 pounds are typically classified as “truckload” (TL). Truckload
shipments may be up to 40,000 pounds or 53’ long. While express, parcel, and LTL shipments are always
intermingled with other shipments on a single piece of equipment and are typically reloaded across
multiple pieces of equipment during their transport, TL shipments usually travel as the only shipment
on a trailer and TL shipments usually deliver on exactly the same trailer as they are picked up on. While
very large shippers may contract directly with carriers, Freightquote provides access to thousands of preferred carriers at competitive market pricing. When shipping freight, it is extremely
important to understand pricing, claims, and insurance.
