It is very important that you read the most common causes for freight shipping cost adjustments so that you may avoid unpleasant surprises when booking your freight shipments through Freightquote.com. We do our best to ensure your freight shipping experience is positive, but the responsibility for providing accurate information falls on you, and the ultimate outcome of your freight shipping experience depends of this.

Here are some of the most common causes for freight quotes that end up with freight cost adjustments.

The oversize fee is the most common cause of freight price adjustments. If your shipment exceeds 12 feet in length, your freight may be charged at oversize fee with some carriers. The fee is valid, of course, because an oversize freight load will place additional responsibilities on the freight carrier. Avoid the oversize fee - and the resulting freight cost adjustment - by knowing the length of your freight and checking with the freight shipping carrier in advance of pickup to ascertain if your freight shipment will qualify for the oversize fee.

Another common cause for freight cost adjustments is the need for a liftgate truck. Liftgate trucks are usually needed for items that weigh in excess of 100 pounds or that are more than 72 inches in length or height. If the freight shipping carrier cannot get the freight from the ground to the bed of the truck, or from the truck bed to the ground, a liftgate truck may become necessary. It's important to note that freight adjustments may result AND that your freight carrier does not need authorization to use a liftgate truck. If the consignee has no other means to unload the freight, even with a dock, the carrier will use the liftgate and charge a fee. The carrier does not need to call ahead to obtain approval for this. This applies to both pickups and deliveries. This freight price adjustment is best avoided by knowing the precise weight and dimensions of your freight and discussing any liftgate truck issues in advance with your freight shipping carrier.

Locations that provide limited delivery access may also result in freight cost adjustments

If the location of your freight shipping delivery provide limited access for your freight delivery carrier, your order may be subject to a freight cost adjustment due to the limited access location.

The following are all examples of limited access locations:

Camps, carnivals, churches, colleges, construction sites, fairs, individual/mini storage units, military base/installations, mine sites, mosques, prisons, schools, synagogues, temples, universities, businesses located outside city limits, rural locations, and farms are limited access.

Commercial businesses that do not open to the walk-in public, or where an employee is not available to assist with loading or unloading, also qualify as limited access locations.

If you are shipping freight to and from any of the following locations, be aware that a limited access location freight price adjustment will occur and discuss the details with your freight carrier in advance of freight pickup.

If the freight carrier is picking up your freight from a business, please make sure the business name is listed on the bill of lading at the time of shipment. If there is no business name, your freight carrier will assume it is not a business and will assess a residential fee, which is another kind of unexpected freight cost adjustment.

What follows is an FAQ that addresses other issues that might result in freight cost adjustments:

What happens if the shipper makes a change to the Bill of Lading before pickup? If you alter the bill of lading at the time of pickup, please understand that this might result in a freight cost adjustment to the quoted freight shipping cost that you initially received.

What if the piece count or weight changes? When the piece count and/or weight changes on a density-based item, the density and class could be affected. In some cases this can significantly change the class of the shipment and would thus result in a freight pricing adjustment. When the piece count changes but the weight stays the same, the carrier will invoice for the weight shown on the bill of lading or reweigh the freight to confirm the actual weight.

What if the consignee address or contact information is changed? If the consignee’s address or contact information changes, this may result in a delay in delivery, reconsignment of the freight, or additional costs due to a zip code changing the quoted rate.

What if a delivery date or time is adding to the bill of lading? If a specific delivery date and/or time is added to the bill of lading, the freight shipping carrier may charge for an expedited service.

Non Commercial Locations include: Churches, schools, universities, farms, ranches, campgrounds, storage facilities, military bases, apartment complexes, dorms, hospitals, home-based businesses, golf courses, country clubs, government installations, residential construction sites, prisons, research facilities, transportation depots, police stations, fire stations, etc.

Some businesses are still considered non-commercial. If the business is zoned non-commercial, has limited access, located outside city limits, rural locations, or is a business based out of a home, the carrier will classify as non-commercial. If a customer insists on setting up a shipment as commercial, but appears to be non-commercial, make a note in the account under customer notes.
